Vinnie and Waldman gig last night

Great reviews! I can't really add anything to what was written. It was good seeing and meeting most of the HODers there. Let's hope Mr. C. plays many more gigs here in LA because he has such incredible skill on the drums.

Hey Oddtime!! Welcome to the drumforum of drumming misfits!! Looking forward to seeing more of your posts.

I can totally relate to what you are saying. Many times, when someone is so "in tune" with something they have a passion for, they may over analyze it to some degree. Me.... I just say it like it is. Sometimes my downfall is trying to convey my thoughts in the written word.... often it doesn't go on paper the way I would really want it to sound. And is the reason I posted the "follow up" to my original post.

But I'd like to take a stab at Choochs comment about the sticks, in that he sees Vinnie as a human being, and even the people we hold in the highest eschelons of achievement make the same "mistakes" as us mere mortals do. I think Chooch was just giving a normal HOD play by play, hopefully to lend an essence of "being there" with us for those that maybe 1/2 way around the world that may have never seen Vince play before.

I don't think the majority of people here believe that we live just "to point" out ones "errors" in musicianship or playing, but rather try to get a more "human" understanding of the way things simply are. My comment was an honest one, and I know it to be true. Vince was reading his butt off and Randy thought that they needed a few more rehersals. This was directly out of Randys mouth. So was, "well... at least we made it to the Koda" from Vinne. It's just part of the way it is, nothing more, nothing less. But no matter what, was still utterly amazing. [img]smile.gif[/img]

All of us here have Vinnie in our hearts. We are privilaged to have this man/drummer in our lives for a brief soujourn. It's like having the privilage of having been around Buddy in his hayday..... there will never be another buddy. As I feel, there will never be another Vinnie. And without disrespect to the many great drummers here on HOD and in the drumming world as well. We are all very glad to be part of this great community.

So ya.... I think your post might have been a little on the harsh side, but remember, we all have Vinnie close to our hearts, and would listen to him till the cows came home.

I just got a response from Vinnie about what you had said, and here's what he wrote in the e-mail to me.

"That was a wonderful statement from Chooch as well. I must thank him for that; it's very touching. Please thank him for me, and also for the stand light! Now that I think of it, I didn't thank him for that after the gig. I feel bad about that. Lots of people around, you know? Then I just forget.

Also, great...thanks for those pics! They are really good!"

Props to Shedder for the pics. If you've got more, I'll forward them to Vince.

All in all. Thank goodness he's playing again in L.A. Lets do whatever it takes to make the L.A. area the place to see Vince play live VERY often!!

Oddtime... please introduce yourself the next time an HOD hang happens. Some of us you couldn't miss via our pictures (namely me). kinda comes out and hits you like a mac truck. [img]wink.gif[/img]

I know Vinnie personally from about 20 years now (although haven't seen him lately) and he always impressed me as a person with "... a veracious appitite for knowledge about everything he does or enjoys. From politics, to drumming, to recording, he just a really well read guy and an amazing orator." PLUS HE IS A REALLY NICE GUY TOO, so I'm very glad you mentioned this as well.

Of course we all know how amazing drummer he is. I'm sure it was an unforgetable evening!

Hi, it's oddtime again.
I did not mean that anyone here is happy that Vinnie is doing mistakes. I know it is a relief to see someone like Dave Weckl or Vinnie drop a stick or forget the form or something, to see they are also humans. Maybe it's because I am from germany and there is a huge amount of , what we call there 'Jazz-police'. These are guys, that you see in the back with arms crossed and just waiting for something to happen that is in their eyes wrong. Because I am from germany (and a lefty) , I also have sometimes problems to express myself especially in writing.
I hope noone got offended with my comments, and if so, I apologize.
Anyway, I was at the Tangier around 5.45pm and saw Vinnie carry his drums from his car into the Club, but was to scared to say something. I always think he would get annoyed if I try to talk to him, so I just went in and had dinner with my wife. My wife is absolutely not into Jazz and Fusion, but even she LOVED the show. She was faszinated (is that spelling right?) with the ease Vinnie was playing, especially the first tune. She has to endure me talking about vinnie and watching vinnie videos almost everyday.
I am fascinated with Vinnie's left hand. If someone has some Vinine Vidz, that are not illegal to share, please let me know.

I hope to see some of you guys the next time. Please let me know if Vinnie is playing somewhere in L.A. again.

I think whoever said that Vinnie dropped a stick was using it to describe how amazing he is

I believe the person said "he even dropped his stick at the ending fill and it still sounded good"

No one on here is lame enough to go to any concert and even less a concert where vinnie is on drums so that they can spot the mistakes and then critisice them

Wow, a lot more posts on this gig that I thought would occur. Oddtime, I think I was standing next to you at the gig near the bar so we may have had the same perspective. I hear what your saying and I think if you met Chooch you would know what he really meant by that.
Chooch and JM (John), you really nailed it with your quotes about how Vinnie's playing affects you and me as well. I had thought the same thing many times but never verbilized it the way you guys have. There are so many great musicians that have come and gone and are still playing but there are few that can reach out and touch us beyond the notes being played. My first exposure to Vinnie was listening to a Zappa tune called "five-five-five". Of course anyone that has heard that knows that the tune is off the hook. That was where I got hooked and since then haven't stopped listening.
I also got to talk to Vince that night. The kit he was using was a special jazz kit that Fred Gretsch had made for him. Vince says he is getting a vintage round badge kit, next week I believe. He digs the classic sound from those drums and can't wait to gig with it.
